On September 9th, 2015, in Ho Chi Minh City, National Office in Southern Region (SROMOST), in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), held the "2015 Korea - Vietnam Textile/Apparel Technology Seminar". More than 200 participants from state management agencies, departments of science and technology, enterprises, universities from Vietnam and Korea attended the conference.
In the past years, the textile/apparel was an industry which has always occupied a high position in Vietnam in all 3 criteria: Major contributor to Vietnam's GDP growth in many consecutive years; providing employment opportunities; low rate of investment for this sector, in line with capacity, labor skills of Vietnam economy.
The integration process has been lifting the position of Vietnam textile/apparel industry in the world market, especially traditional and potential markets of textile/apparel industry Vietnam such as US, EU and so on. Particularly after Vietnam joined TPP, more opportunities would be opened to the textile/apparel industry of Vietnam from the advantages of production capacity and skills of workers that Vietnam had fostered in the past years. However, the challenge of economic integration has been growing; the ups and downs of other economic sectors and other countries have given us many valuable lessons. Therefore, the “2015 Korea-Vietnam Textile/Apparel Technology Seminar” with valuable reports of the speakers from Korea, Vietnam are learned lessons, suggestion for production - business orientation of Vietnamese textile/apparel enterprises in the future. The knowledge gained in this seminar will help managers, manufacturers of textile/apparel industry VN to collate, compare and make the production – business plan for restructuring of production, adjusting firm size, market development, ... for enterprises and locals in the future.
Mr. Byung Chul Moo - Commercial Counselor of the Korean Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh said that 70% companies in Vietnam textile/apparel industry are manufacturers of garment and ready-made garment. Most of the companies (83.1%) are small and weak with the capacity of below 200 workers. Most of them imported yarn and fabric from Taiwan, China and Korea. In the coming time, Vietnam textile/apparel industry needs to increase investment based on the influence of TPP, FTAs while enhancing competitiveness of dyeing companies.
According to Mrs. Dang Phuong Dung - Vice Chairman of Vietnam Textile & Apparel Association (Vitas), the textile/apparel industry has many advantages such as clear policies from the government; market availability, supports from public, skilled labor, and low labor cost. However, this industry is dependent too much on raw materials, imported machinery and equipment; poor management level; lack of connection with the market as well as the cost of capital is too high. Therefore, Vietnam textile/apparel industry needs to take advantage as much as possible from TPP, FTAs, set added value as the goal, enhance development of auxiliary industry, and choose the right market; simultaneously promote fashion design, branding as well as strengthening cooperation on technology transfer, technique in the areas of textiles, dyeing; ... However, at the present, the transfer of technology in the textile/apparel sector of Vietnam has been facing many difficulties. Korea experts said that textile/apparel companies of Vietnam now are not qualified to receive new technology and techniques because current engineers and technician are insufficient and weak. Therefore, Vietnam needs to have a strategy for training human resources in this field.
At the seminar, participants also listened to the presentations from Vietnamese and Korean experts such as: Strategies and trade policies between Vietnam - Korea; Development strategy of Vietnam's garment in the present situation; Prospects of textile/apparel industry with TPP and regulation to the origin of products; Technology development trend of the textile industry; Environmental friendly technologies in dyeing and finishing; Trends in the use of CAD / CAM in apparel; The development trend of global brands.
